A Message from Lambeth Council’s Advice Team Healthy Finances Week   We know times are tough and many of our residents are struggling to keep their finances in order and are often resorting to drastic measures to stay afloat. That’s why we’re holding our first ever Healthy Finances Week between 15 and 22 July. The dedicated week of action will: raise awareness of the pitfalls of using payday loan shops offer advice to help residents avoid or deal with loan sharks promote effective money management offer advice about managing debt There will also be plenty of opportunities to get advice about the on-going benefit cuts and how they are affecting you. Are the benefit cuts fair?

 So many cuts are being made to benefits this month that many people are calling it ‘Black April’ and predicting that the welfare state will never be the same. Of course, lots of people think cutting benefits is a good idea. They’d rather do that than do real work like put up taxes, chase after tax dodgers or close loopholes. But then, they’re usually people lucky enough not to have to rely on the safety net that benefits provide. And they usually have no idea how little most claimants receive and how difficult it is to make ends meet, especially if – like us – you live in central London. So good in so many ways, so expensive if you’re poor! Benefit Cuts

Massive changes are on the way this year to the benefits many Kennington Park residents receive – and these are on top of the much-publicised below inflation 1% ‘uprating’. The TA is committed not just to trying to help residents cope but also to campaigning with others across Lambeth and London against these attacks on the poorest and most vulnerable amongst us.   * The ‘Bedroom Tax’ Don’t be misled – it’s not a tax that you can refuse to pay, it’s a cut in the amount of benefit you receive. If you have an ‘extra’ bedroom empty for more than 13 weeks your housing benefit will be cut by 14%, more than one ‘extra’ then the cut is a massive 25%. ‘Under-occupying’, according to this government of millionaires in their taxpayer-subsidised houses – many of them just up the road – means you are only allowed one bedroom for…
