Come and hear all about it and have your say at the Public Meeting being organised by the Communication Workers Union on Monday 3 June at 7.15 in the Kennington Park Estate Community Centre. Speakers include Kate Hoey MP and a representative of the Post Office.
Now the sun’s out, it’s time to brighten up the ‘Hood! Lambeth Council wants to know how we would like to improve our neighbourhood! They’ve contacted the TA about two schemes: The Neighbourhood Enhancement Programme (NEP) and Community Freshview. The NEP has funding from TFL to pay for improving local streets, doing things like repairing pavements, traffic slowing measures, cycling improvements, planting trees and flowers. The Community Freshview project involves local residents getting together to brighten up the place, install planters, paint scruffy patches and give the area a bit of a facelift. Lambeth provides the material – we provide the workers! The recent resurfacing of Magee Street was done as part of these schemes. Let us have your ideas of what you would like to see done around the Estate via the Contact Us box on the right and we will pass them on to the Council.

This is what Lambeth Council thinks of the proposals: According to the London Fire Brigade, the Mayor’s proposals will actually mean the average time it takes the first fire engine to reach an emergency will rise by 34 seconds. Closing Clapham fire station threatens to increase concerns about safety and could undermine the preventative work that fire fighters have done in the local community over many years. So many cuts are being made to benefits this month that many people are calling it ‘Black April’ and predicting that the welfare state will never be the same. Of course, lots of people think cutting benefits is a good idea. They’d rather do that than do real work like put up taxes, chase after tax dodgers or close loopholes. But then, they’re usually people lucky enough not to have to rely on the safety net that benefits provide. And they usually have no idea how little most claimants receive and how difficult it is to make ends meet, especially if – like us – you live in central London. At the Tenant’s Association, we’ve been looking at service charges once again – specifically, the invoices for work carried out between April and September 2012. And once again, we’re raising question. Areas we are particularly concerned about are: The high cost of CCTV. Communal electricity bills. Controlled door entry repairs. What we discover will affect all of our rent and service charge bills next April. The good news! Our work last year (see February’s post on Service Charges) resulted in residents in several blocks having reduced rent and service charge bills this year – which, with everything else going up, is good news. If we can maintain and improve the services we receive from Hyde and its contractors and reduce the amount we have to pay for them at the same time, then we’ll be very pleased.
