TA News

News from KPE TA – July 2014 Repairs – our heads, their brick walls!   Since the start of the new repairs contract with Mears at the end of October last year, the Tenants’ Association has been very active in challenging Hyde Head Office on behalf of our tenants. The contractor (Mears) appears to tenants to have failed to perform to the contract from the beginning and continues to perform poorly. We have been assured that the most senior staff at Head Office are dealing with the problem, holding top level meetings every week. This is what we have been told for over six months now. The best brains at Hyde Head Office have been defeated by one repair contractor and HSH residents have suffered the consequences. ‘Bear with us’ Hyde’s publicity machine has begged us. ‘The necessary steps are being taken!’ we have been told. ‘Bear with us a…

No Confidence!

Following recent changes to Hyde’s repairs contractors, angry tenants made their feelings clear to Hyde’s Resident Services Manager at the most recent Tenants Association Meeting. Particularly angry were several residents of Hornby House who had badly affected by flooding and damage as a result of blocked drains. The following motions have been sent to the Hyde Group’s Chief Executive Officer and the Chair of the Board. No confidence in Hyde’s management of the repair service Kennington Park Estate Tenants’ Association wishes to register a vote of no confidence in Hyde’s management of the repair service. In Hyde’s own words the service should ‘give residents a more efficient, flexible and personal service’. The experience of the residents of Kennington Park Estate is of a poor, badly managed inefficient service. The experience of the service has been of: A lack of urgency in response to emergency situations Operatives attending to emergency call…

Proposed changes to Hyde Southbank Homes’ Governing Body

The Hyde Group has written to Kennington Park Estate residents telling us they are going to change what was agreed when we voted to transfer to Hyde Southbank Homes in 2005 by removing the element of local control we have through the HSH Board. We oppose this. Why?     We are being gobbled up! We voted to transfer to a small, Lambeth-based organisation with local management and local control, not a large corporation. The Hyde Group manages 49,000 properties (not just in London, but also across the South East, the East of England and the East Midlands), and wants to get bigger. HSH covers 3,200 properties at the Oval and Stockwell. We are the minnow being gobbled up by the whale. A more remote HSH Board with no HSH residents and no local councillors means no local voice, no local control, no local understanding, no local knowledge, and is very likely…

Service Charges – Again….

At the Tenant’s Association, we’ve been looking at service charges once again – specifically, the invoices for work carried out between April and September 2012. And once again, we’re raising question. Areas we are particularly concerned about are: The high cost of CCTV. Communal electricity bills. Controlled door entry repairs. What we discover will affect all of our rent and service charge bills next April. The good news! Our work last year (see February’s post on Service Charges) resulted in residents in several blocks having reduced rent and service charge bills this year – which, with everything else going up, is good news. If we can maintain and improve the services we receive from Hyde and its contractors and reduce the amount we have to pay for them at the same time, then we’ll be very pleased. If you have queries about service charges, especially if you’ve spotted anything on your bill that…
